The Flash is back from a break and it delivered an episode packed with events. Directed by Kevin Smith, this episode sets up an interesting stage by advancing the main plot related to Devoe in a rather unexpected way. Overall, this was an entertaining episode with lots of comic touches and also some interesting developments to make the viewers keep wondering. The Flash has made some changes in its story telling patterns in this season which have worked positively in most parts though some character arcs have been moving in circles making things repetitive.

This following parts will contain spoilers for the episode so if  you have not watched it yet you may stop reading.

The team was able to locate another of meta-human from the bus, Janey Petty and she has the power to change the density of any object and thus make it defy gravity and float up for a certain period of time. She robs a museum artifact and when Barry and Ralph follow the lead she uses her powers on Barry. A few awkward moments come up for Barry as he is kept tied to a rope and stuck to the ceiling with Ralph cracking jokes. Barry gets annoyed with Ralph’s inability to stick to the plans and his lack of seriousness and he ultimately benches Ralph.

The show has been treating Ralph mostly the same way throughout the season where he keeps rediscovering the hero inside him and then goes back to getting annoying the next moment. Eventually Iris asks Barry not to go so tough on Ralph and Ralph is finally able to save the day during the final conflict and the team is able to capture Janet. Ralph has always been an unconventional superhero with traces of man-child syndrome but he needs to get out of the same behavioral patterns at some point.

Jason Mewes and director Kevin Smith turns up as Jay and Silent Bob in the episode to add some further spice to the comic moments. But the major comic portion of the episode involves the side plot between Danny Trejo as the Breacher and Cisco. The Breacher has lost his powers and asks Cisco for help. Caitlin diagnoses that the reason for this is old age but Cisco does not want to disappoint his girlfriend’s father. He tries to trick the Breacher with a fake cure at first but it does not work and he has to tell the truth finally. Though angry at first, the Breacher comes back in the end to communicate that he is going into retirement and offers Cisco the role of the Breacher, which will also enable Cisco to spend more time with Gypsy. Though the script treats the Breacher’s character as quite naive, Danny Trejo keeps up the act with his usual terrifying self and the equation between him and Carlos Valdes is quite entertaining. Whether Cisco takes up the offer and leaves team Flash to spend more time with Gypsy is something to be seen in the coming episodes.

The main Devoe story line showed some major developments with the happy marriage that was shown existing between Marlize and Clifford coming to a standstill. Clifford have been altering his wife’s memory and drugging her to retain her feeling of love for him. Poor Marlize has been stuck in the same timeline for quite some time, in the pattern of Groundhog Day. With the bond between the husband and wife team breaking up, team Flash may actually find the chink in Devoe’s armor. Marlize will definitely escape from Clifford’s clutches and there is a chance of her shifting her allegiance to team Flash. With multiple characters playing Devoe, there is some unevenness in the portrayal of the character. This week’s Devoe was rather stiffly acted out by Miranda MacDougall who was much better in her portrayal of the Fiddler. This is one side effect of having a body shifting villain where the overall impact of the character can come down.

Something is going on with Harry as his obsession with the thinking cap continues and he wakes up Gideon by going into the secret chamber. He definitely needs some counseling, preferably from his daughter, so that he does not turns into some evil version of himself. Strangely the episode makes no mention of Matthew who joined the team in the last episode. He will surely turn up during as the script sees fit, probably during the next confrontation with Devoe.

The Flash returns on 17th April with the new episode “Lose Yourself”.
