The Flash follows up on the tragedy of death that happened last week with an eventful episode this week. Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold has had quite a few noteworthy presences in the earlier seasons with his character arc taking a positive turn with The Flash’s help and when he announced his departure from Legends Of Tomorrow, it was only natural for Captain Cold to appear finally for one last time in The Flash. The show uses him quite well as a logical voice helping the troubled members of Team Flash deal with their problems. The Flash has a tendency of exaggerating the drama at some points in the narrative which often feels overdone but that has been its style from the very beginning. With the addition of Captain Cold the episode was able to have a few lively moments in its otherwise grim tone and some closure on the interactions between The Flash and Captain Cold.
The episode opens with Harry finding out from Gideon that the use of dark matter has affected his brain with his intelligence fading slowly and there is no way to reverse the effect. Later, Cisco gets interested in enhancing his intelligence with the thinking cap so that the team can see and plan beyond DeVoe. Harry tries to dissuade him at first but then agrees to help him out. Barry and Iris is shown discussing Ralph’s death with the counselor and as she asks Barry about the effect of Ralph’s death on him, he replies that death has been a part of his life so often that he has learnt to deal with him. So for Barry to stop denying his grief and allow it flow through him without of suppressing, remains the main thread of the episode.
The team then finds out that Devoe is after Fallout who is being held in Tracy Brand’s laboratory so they decide to transport him to someplace safer. To prevent Fallout from reaching a critical state they decide to take help from Captain Cold/ Leonard Snart. Barry and Cisco reaches Earth-X where the Captain is shown hunting Siren-X in a warehouse. The Captain agrees to help Barry and as they make way to Earth-1 through a breach, Siren-X follows them through. The team then builds a special suit for Fallout which will contain his radiation levels and then if required they plan to use Captain Cold’s gun to cool his temperatures. As they shift Fallout to a safer ARGUS location in a truck, DeVoe turns up and using Ralph’s power is able to overcome the effects of the sonic weapon that The Flash uses. Barry is then suddenly caught up by the images of Ralph’s last moments and is unable to act any further.
Siren-X turns up and uses her sonic cry to throw down all of them. DeVoe escapes and Siren- X takes Fallout hostage. Later Devoe is shown in his pocket dimension, surprised that his calculations of The Flash being able to defeat Siren-X did not come true. Marlize reminds him that his logical calculations fail to account for human emotions as the Flash is affected by his friend’s death. It seemed very odd that someone with Devoe’s power is unable to deal with the Siren and had to escape without gaining control of Fallout. The main intention of the show is to indicate that Devoe’s weakness is his extreme faith in logical calculations and no faith in the value of human emotions. Marlize is shown to fail earlier as she tries to get some emotional response from Devoe and he ends up limiting her role as just his “technician”. The show nicely explores the equation between the husband and wife and as DeVoe turns colder with every power he gains the more she is drifting apart from him. It will not be long before Marlize breaks out of Devoe’s chemical control and his consideration of emotions as the biggest human folly is proved to be a major cause of his downfall.
Siren- X turns up at the police station and tries to turn Fallout into a nuclear bomb with her sonic blasts. Her aim is to kill everyone as a revenge for Oliver’s death in Earth-X. The Flash turns up and again is hindered by the memories of a dying Ralph as Fallout steadily crosses radiation limits. Snart is able to motivate Flash to get up and act and Flash finally knocks out the Siren. The team is then able to cool down Fallout and he is finally sent to the ARGUS lab. The presence of Siren-X in this episode seems only to help Barry express his grief in the end, as otherwise she does not in any way to enrich the main plot. Barry is finally able to free himself from the pent up grief and shed the much needed tears for Ralph more so because he considers himself responsible for Ralph’s death. Snart says goodbye to each member of team Flash as he returns to Earth-X and it is quite a poignant moment for the show. Captain Cold has always been an entertaining presence with his eccentric ways and the show will definitely miss him.
Earlier Harry had broken the thinking cap and had admitted to Cisco about his deteriorating condition. Now he is shown packing his bags to leave but Cisco stops him and says that they will find a way to help his brain get back to normal. The show may have missed a chance to do something interesting with Harrison Wells’s character as it look like he is just going back to square one here. Caitlin discusses her DNA tests with Iris and finds an anomaly in her DNA which she thinks is an indication that Killer Frost is still present inside her. In the end DeVoe is shown to be aware of Fallout’s presence in the ARGUS lab and is ready to play his next move. So this was quite a packed episode and with DeVoe all set to execute his end game, things should get more interesting in the next episode.
The Flash returns on 1st May with the new episode “Therefore She Is”.
