The Flash Review: Season 4 episode-20 ; “Therefore She Is”.

ther

The Flash had been busy focusing on Devoe’s actions all through the season and it never had much time to explore the past equations between the villain and his wife Marlize. It finds time to explore that during this episode, giving us a glimpse of Devoe’s character arc which makes this episode refreshingly different from the others. The season 4 has been good so far but it has not been exciting in the same level as of the past seasons and with the last few episodes left, there is no real tension or thrill rising up through the episodes. The main plan of DeVoe is revealed at last and this time the threat is not at a personal level for team Flash but at a more global level.

The episode starts with a flashback revealing DeVoe and Marlize meeting up in a discussion in Oxford University eight years earlier. These flashbacks come up at regular intervals showing the pair’s courtship and then highlighting on DeVoe’s ideas that technology is a curse for humanity and his need to purge the human society. Marlize leaves him considering his ideas as too radical but after a terrorist attack on her project DeVoe comes to meet her and she is shown aligned, a little too easily perhaps, to his ideas. But Marlize in the present day could clearly see how the man she loved has turned into a cold, remorseless killer with the ambition to rule the world. As the couple goes to steal a particular metal Marlize can not accept Devoe’s unnecessary killing of a young security guard. Later she also manages to convince DeVoe not to kill Gypsy and ultimately she leaves DeVoe again, by trapping him in his own technology.

The show has been hinting at the drift between the pair for quite some time and we finally get to see the outcome here. It will be interesting to see how the pair who depended on each other behaves now. The emotional impact of the separation on DeVoe should be considerable and whether he has become totally devoid of emotions or some part of his former self is still left is something that is to be seen. It seems that it will also not be easy for Marlize to directly join team Flash against her husband so how she acts now will also be important. Overall, this separation puts in some hopes for team Flash whose members are quite struggling with their own issues. Neil Sandilands and Kim Engelbrecht do full justice to their roles and we do get to see two well fleshed out characters.

The equation between another pair, Cisco and Gypsy was another highlight of the show. Cisco asks for Gypsy’s help to work against DeVoe but the pair fails to work together successfully. After some emotional discussions, Cisco reveals that he cannot accept the role of the Breacher though he wants to spend more time with Gypsy.  The couple finally decides to separate and so Carlos Valdes is staying on as Cisco in team Flash. It was never felt that the character of Gypsy brought in any specific purpose or development for the show even though there was a lot of potential to explore the character. The episode settles two important plot lines but while dealing with multiple couple issues, it slows down a bit where the main thrilling elements of the plot take a backseat.

Team Flash tries to stop DeVoe twice from collecting two items that he needs for his final plan but fails on both occasions. Caitlin is shown risking her life to spike her adrenaline level which might help to bring back Killer Frost. It is not clear whether her motivations are personal or for the sake of the team or probably both but her actions are foolhardy without doubt. The way the writers have made Caitlin so desperate for Killer Frost to come back as also not working in favor of the character. The episode also delves into Harry’s situation where he is losing his ability to think properly. In an ingenious way, the show uses Cecile’s ability to read minds, which was a rather useless development till now, to help Harry and give a coherent shape to his ideas. Harry ,with the help of Cecile, figures out that DeVoe’s final plan is to flood people’s brains with dark matter and render them incapable of proper thoughts.

The show has also been teasing about the mystery girl from the cafeteria for some time and this time we get to know that she is a speedster. It seems that she is going to hint at some plot development which will affect the show in Season 5 and hopefully the writers will be able to explain her significance satisfactorily in the coming episodes. This season has had its focus on team Flash in general and we have hardly seen a heroic moment or some exciting action from Barry Allen. Barry does well with his good natured mentoring of others and engaging in some motivational speeches but the show is about the Flash and it will be better that if he moves in to the center of the action in the coming episodes.

The Flash returns on 8th May with the new episode “Harry and the Harrisons”.
