The Flash Review: Season 4 episode-21 ; “Harry and the Harrisons”

To get straight to the point, The Flash delivered a rather disappointing episode which is a perfect waste of screen time, more so towards the end of the season when it should be charging with all guns firing. Season 5 has been lighter in tone than the previous ones but “Harry and the Harrisons” could be a termed as a filler episode at the best. The fallout between the DeVoe couple shown in the earlier episode was not developed any further and the entire episode was spent addressing minor plot points, adding very little substance to the main plot. This leaves the thought lingering in mind that maybe The Flash should cut down the number of episodes from season 5 to maintain the quality and pace.

To destroy DeVoe’s satellites the team looks out for a tech free weapon and decides to search for Amunet. They find her in disguise and she agrees to help them. Amunet’s special metal has been stolen by Norvock, the guy with a poisonous snake in one eye socket, and the team ultimately confronts him to get the stuff back. Finally Amunet gives them a bomb, made out of the metal she uses, to destroy the satellites. The character of Amunet was not developed in much detail earlier and this gives Katee Sackhoff a chance to project the eccentric persona of Amunet Black on screen. She brings up an unbalanced energy and enthusiasm in her performance which does elevate the entertainment factor of episode to some extent.

On the other hand Harry and Cisco decides to take help from the Council of Wells regarding Harry’s problem. A major chunk of the episode is spent with Tom Cavanagh trying out various outfits and accents which is funny in its own way but at this stage the series could have done better. Tom Cavanagh has portrayed various shades of his own self in The Flash with great effect but without adding much significance to the plot, even his brilliance seems to be wastage. The ultimate outcome was to get Harry in touch with his emotional self which helps him discover that it is Devoe’s split with his wife that is preventing him from launching the satellites. The deduction does not make much sense as there could be many other reasons for Devoe to not launch them. If it is solely the split with Marlize that is stopping Clifford Devoe, then it is just plain luck that is helping Team Flash to stay in the game. In fact the entire plot line was just the way Harry said it himself, a “colossal waste of time.”

A more interesting plot thread that the episode develops is Iris sharing all the facts about DeVoe to the residents of Central City through her website. Barry, though hesitant about the idea at first agrees to it in the end. The team has always had their secret way of operating without giving the public much idea about the threats coming up and the methods used to deal with them. The idea of sharing information related to classified threats which can create mass panic is tricky and much of such news is censored in real world as well. Iris overruling that barrier is a significant step taken by the show and it would be interesting to see how far this theme is developed in future. In the end we see the residents responding to Iris’s post and helping them with the last seen location of DeVoe.

The desperation of Caitlin to re establish Killer Frost within herself is something that is quite contrary to her attitude towards her other half when she first showed up. But the show now seems to devote all its energies to establish a nice rapport between Caitlin and her alter ego. Caitlin seeks help from Amunet and asks for a genetic splicer which had helped to bring out Killer Frost earlier but ultimately learns that the splicer was just a placebo. She finally realizes that to bring out Killer Frost she will have to look deep inside her, instead of trying to obtain help from technology. The show is planning to bring out Killer Frost in the final fight with DeVoe so we should be able to see her in action soon.

This was one of the poorest, if not the most, episodes of the season that was delivered by The Flash. The show’s effort to putting in lighter moments is rather shifting the focus from the main DeVoe plot making the stakes lose importance. Losing the momentum of the narrative resulting in the loss of the viewer’s interest is something that the show needs to avoid. Hopefully the season will deliver more excitement and pace in the ending episodes.

The Flash returns on 15th May with the new episode “Think Fast”.
