Best Hiking and Trekking Boots For Men in India

Back in the 2000s, the only option for good quality trekking boots available in India were those from Woodlands. With the expansion of the outdoor market in India, today, there are more options.

Even so, only a couple of the top international outdoor footwear brands have made their products widely available in the country.

Still, there are quite a few options to choose from for people of all budget ranges. In this article, we take a closer look at 15 of the best men’s trekking boots available in India that vary in features and design.

Keep in mind, that the quality, durability, and features you get will depend on the price range. However, all of these boots are reliable options that offer a secure footing on rugged terrains.

Note, some international brands like Merrell and Salomon don’t sell directly in India. So you need to pick them from platforms like Flipkart and Myntra. Amazon is not an option as the prices remain too high. The problem is that the shoes you choose may not be readily available on these sites.

For example, the Salomon Quest 4D GTX is one of the best trekking boots for men in India you can pick. However, at the time of writing this article, it remains unavailable.

Time to take a closer look at the 15 options on this list.

Premium Hiking Shoes For Men in India

Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX

Salomon waterproof trekking boots for men

Pros

  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • Great toe and ankle protection
  • Excellent grip and stability

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not the most durable

The X Ultra lineup from Salomon is the first choice for many hikers across the globe for its design and dependability. The lightweight design of the X Ultra 4 allows you to stay nimble on a trek route- great for boulder hopping- while not compromising protection and stability.

The upper part is a combination of mesh, PU-coated leather, and textile that keeps the weight light. The mid-top version comes with the standard lacing system as opposed to the speed lacing in the low-top model. Once laced, the cradle around the ankle feels secure and keeps the ankle stable.

The combination of padding on the heel and collar keeps the foot comfortable. Salomon uses an Advanced Chassis design that keeps the foot stable on rough terrain, thereby increasing comfort.

Now, the midsole cushioning has been reduced to cut down the weight. You can feel the difference when you compare it with something like the Columbia Peakfreak II.

As expected, the traction is great – thanks to the Contagrip rubber and aggressively designed lugs. Also, the balance between waterproofing and breathability is great.

One downside of the lightweight design is the reduced durability, especially while carrying heavy loads. Expect the X Ultra 4 to start showing its age after around 250-300 kilometers, depending on the terrain.

Overall, a great pick for those who prefer a lightweight mid-cut trekking boot that offers excellent agility.

Salomon Quest 4D Gtx

Salomon Quest 4D snow trekking boots

Pros

  • A top-grade trekking/hiking boot
  • Build with premium-grade materials
  • Tough design with solid stability
  • Dependable traction on slippery and loose ground

Cons

  • It is on the heavier side
  • Cushioning could be better

The Quest 4D GTX has been the Big Daddy of heavy-duty trekking boots for some time, mainly because of its tank-like construction. This is the right boot for tackling challenging terrains on a multi-day trek with a heavy rucksack on your back.

This is a high-ankle boot that fits like a glove and offers great comfort. And even though it is a heavy boot, you can start wearing it right out of the box without any break-in period. Like most Salomon boots, the underfoot cushioning is modest.

Moreover, even with the solid build, the boot retains some flexibility. Goes without saying, you get excellent waterproofing. The high length reduces breathability, but not by too much. On the plus side, it keeps the foot comfortable in higher altitudes and is a great shoe for trekking in snow.

One issue that I had with the earlier version of the boot was with the laces. No matter how I tied them, they came undone or loose after some time. The latest model seems to have gotten away with this irritating problem.

The tread design offers good traction and excellent durability. Even after 100 kilometers, the treads show little wear. The weak point is the connection between the outsole and the shoe body, which may start to come loose after a few years of use.

Frankly, the Quest is a premium trekking boot for men and not for casual trekkers, especially those on a budget. If you are a day hiker or go for one trek per year over moderate trails, then this will be an overkill. But if you are a serious trekker and prefer to go for high-altitude Himalayan treks, this boot is a great companion.

Salomon XA Pro 3D v8 GTX

Pros

  • Great balance of waterproofing and breathability
  • Good traction
  • An effective and easy lacing system
  • Good underfoot protection

Cons

  • High price tag
  • Cushioning could be better
  • Not a flexible shoe

The XA Pro 3D is a multitasking shoe that can be used both by hikers and trail runners. If you don’t need a trekking shoe that comes over your ankles, this is a good option.

It is not as light as a typical runner’s shoe like the Salomon Sense Ride 4, which adds to the heft. That gives you the confidence to move over loose rocks and boulders.

The XA Pro 3D is comfortable right out of the box. The cushioning from the midsole is good but not great. The burly toe cap and the rigid heel are not something runners may like, but they provide tons of protection. While the relatively firm midsole offers good support, some might find it restrictive.

Since it comes with Gore-Tex, you can expect full waterproofing. I have never had any issues with the breathability of Salomon shoes even when I used them in hot conditions. The Contragrip sole offers excellent grip over mud and slime. However, the treads don’t shed mud. So, make sure you clean them up at the end of the day.

I am a big fan of Salomon’s Quicklace system. It does away with the hassle of tying shoelaces and ensures even tightening all around the toe box. And even though the laces look thin, they last for ages.

Salomon shoes usually last around 3-4 years for me and the XA Pro 3D should not be an exception. But if you carry heavy rucksacks, it will probably last less. If you prefer lightweight trekking shoes and don’t mind the high price tag, go for it.

Merrell Moab 2 GTX Mid-Top

Merrell Moab trekking boot

Pros

  • A well-designed trekking boot
  • Great cushioning
  • Excellent outsole design
  • A good degree of protection

Cons

  • Not for budget buyers
  • Not ideal for carrying heavy weights for days

The Merrell Moab is another waterproof shoe for trekking that has consistently been a popular choice for hikers for years. I have always felt the cushioning in Merrell’s shoes more comfortable than that of Salomon. However, the Merrells tend to last for fewer miles.  waterproof shoes for trekking

The top area of the Moab 2 is a mixture of suede and mesh.  Like most Merrells, the shoe needs no break-in. Once you tighten the laces, the fit is snug and feels extremely comfortable from the tongue to the heel.

A Gore-Tex lining ensures that your feet remain dry during stream crossings. However, the breathability is not the best in class. Then again, you can consider it a blessing in cold conditions.

The midsole is designed to absorb the impacts of a long day on rocky trails. While this isn’t an ultra-lightweight boot, it is light enough to allow you to pound through the kilometers quickly. I feel Merrell has done a great job of balancing comfort, protection, and agility.

With Vibram TC5+ rubber on the soles, the boot offers one of the best grips you will find on hiking boots. The multi-directional 5 mm lugs work great on mud, snow, and wet rock and even when you are going downhill on scree slopes.

As mentioned, the suede upper is not the most durable. You can expect nicks and scratches around the toebox after walking through a few boulder fields.  Also, the outsole may come loose after a few years of use.

All in all, the Moab 2 is one of the most versatile and comfortable trekking boots for newbie trekkers in India. However, the availability can be an issue.

Forclaz Leather MT100

Forclaz trekking shoes

Pros

  • A hardy trekking boot
  • Good waterproofing
  • Offers good foot support

Cons

  • Picking the right fit can be challenging
  • Could be priced lower

Now, many buyers might get confused between Quechua vs Forclaz. Along with Quechua, Forclaz is also another brand marketed by Decathlon. Both brands have their working centers located side by side in Europe, but there is a big difference.

While Quechua focuses on lighter products suitable for day hikes, Forclaz designs products more suited for multi-day treks. So if you are looking for a durable hiking shoe, choosing a Forclaz product is the better option.

As a mountain trekking boot, the MT100 feels hefty and is robust enough to tackle Himalayan terrain. While the padding isn’t too thick, the comfort levels are acceptable. The design also keeps your feet protected on rough trails. But they will need some time to break in.

Forclaz has used special leather on this shoe to ensure waterproofing and is breathable. However, the leather needs some maintenance, like grease application, to preserve its waterproofing ability. The bottom surface is a grippy rubber sole that offers good traction on wet rocks and snow. This also makes it a good shoe for trekking in snow.

I’d suggest that you pick the show after testing it out as some users noted abrasion pints in the ankle and toe areas. Overall,  this is a reliable men’s trekking boot, but I wish it was priced lower.

Columbia Peakfreak II Mid

Colombia lightweight trekking boot

Pros

  • A well-designed trekking boot
  • Doesn’t weigh you down
  • Outsole offers a solid grip
  • Solid durability
  • Expensive option
  • The tongue could have been longer

Columbia has a range of dependable hiking shoes with great features. The Peakfreak II is a smart-looking hiking shoe with solid build quality. The shoe isn’t too heavy, but the all-around protection it offers is great.

Firstly, this mountain trekking boot requires no break-in. The fit is snug and there is enough room for wider feet. Next, the comfort is very well balanced and the midsole is good at absorbing impacts from rough surfaces or sharp rocks. This is a shoe that works well when you have to walk 8 hours a day.

Columbia uses their own breathable waterproof membrane called OutDry. In my experience, the waterproofing performance has always been good unless the water level reaches above the ankles. The Adapt Trax outsole is a great performer, even for occasional walks above the snowline.

I wish the hexagonal lugs were a bit longer but they hold on well even after 100 kilometers. One thing is, mud tends to stick to the outsole lugs. So, make sure to clear them after crossing muddy stretches.

All in all, the Peakfreak II offers a fantastic combination of support and comfort. It is not cheap, but definitely one of the best options for technical terrain as well as casual walks.

Columbia Escape Thrive Endure

best Colombia trekking boots In India

Pros

  • Lightweight but supportive
  • Superb underfoot comfort
  • Good waterproofing
  • Expensive option
  • Some may not like the design

If you want super comfortable cushioning along with a bouncy feel with every step you take during a trek, the Escape Thrive Endure is a great pick. They are priced INR 1000 more than the Peakfreak II, but the extra comfort is worth it.

The big difference in comfort is due to the use of a Techlite PLUSH midsole which adds to the height of the shoe. The extra thickness does not add to the weight of the shoe and it feels light on the feet. The additional height also allows you to easily move through streams. Additionally, the Outdry lining keeps your feet dry.

The mesh upper is seamless and ensures long-term durability. The lacing system works great and there is sufficient padding in the collar area as well. There is an Ortholite footbed that you can remove. The support levels are good enough to cover all types of terrain.

On the outside, the thick midsole looks prone to damage. However, they can resist abrasion effectively. You might take some time to adjust to the extra stack height. Also, the AdaptTrax outsole offers a solid grip on both wet and dry surfaces.

In short, the Escape Thrive Endure from Columbia is probably the most comfortable men’s trekking boot in India you can pick.

Adidas Terrex AX4

Adidas trekking boot

Pros

  • A light and nimble shoe
  • Excellent all-terrain traction and grip
  • Comfortable for long-distance hikes
  • A versatile design

Cons

  • Limited toe protection
  • Lacks premium cushioning

This is a great trekking shoe from Adidas that is often overlooked. Some may say that it is too expensive for a low-cut shoe. But, you may manage to get it at a discount, which makes it a great deal. If you prefer shoes with a traditional look, this is the right choice as one of the best trekking boots in India.

You won’t feel plush cushioning and out-of-the-box comfort with the AX4- the midsole is on the thinner side. But once you use it for a few days, you will appreciate the comfort and protection it offers.

Even though the shoe is on the stiffer side, the midsole does offer a springy feel. That makes it great for multi-day walks and hopping over rocks.

Thanks to the Continental rubber outsole, the grip on wet rocks and soft soil is great. Adidas has redesigned the heel portion to provide better braking ability on loose ground. The chevron lugs are also engineered to shed mud. The wide base also helps to keep your foot stable.

Even though the outer material is mostly mesh, the shoe offers good durability. The overall build quality is robust. That said, some more protection around the toe area could have been better.

Note, this Adidas trekking shoe is not waterproof. The AX4 has a Gore-Tex version with waterproofing that is priced even higher. There is also a mid-cut version of this boot that might make more sense for some trekkers.

Best Mid-Range Hiking Boots For Men in India

Quechua MH500

Quechua trekking shoes

Pros

  • Good build quality
  • Keeps the feet dry in the rain
  • Effective lacing system
  • Offers good value

Cons

  • Not for intense trekking at higher altitudes
  • The tongue could have been longer

This mid-height hiking boot from Quechua that the manufacturer has field tested on trails to ensure good performance. It is good to know that the brand pays so much attention to detail.

To start with, these boots are on the stiffer side when you put them on. However, the overall comfort level is good, thanks to the thick EVA midsole. The foot area is leather that offers good durability and also adapts to the shape of your foot in time.

The lugs on the outsole are designed for traction and grip and the heel lugs are angled for better downhill stability, The extra space between the lugs makes it easier to move over loose rocks. The toe box also has plenty of impact protection.

The MH500 has a special inner membrane to make it fully waterproof along with a water-resistant coating on the outer surface. On the downside, this impacts the breathability. This is not a good choice on a hot day in lower altitudes.

In short, the Quechua MH500 offers good value for regular treks at medium altitudes. And even if you head into a few kilometers of technical terrain, the shoe will offer good performance.

Sketchers Max Protect

best trekking boots In India

Pros

  • A versatile shoe
  • Great quality outsole
  • Good build quality
  • Good combination of support and cushioning

Cons

  • Requires a break-in period
  • No mid-ankle variant

Designed for walking and hiking, the Max Protect from Sketchers combines comfort and traction in a durable design. The best part is the chunky Goodyear outsole which offers superb grip on all types of terrain. You could depend on the Max Protect while walking on slippery rocks or scree zones.

Now, this shoe is on the stiffer side of the scale, so you would need a break-in period. However, the excellent Memory Foam insole and side padding provide sufficient cushioning to the feet.

At the same time, your feet remain secure in rocky areas. Once you put the shoe on, you will note that the fit and finish are top-notch. In short, it is built to last.

Keep in mind, the synthetic outer layer is water-resistant and not waterproof. However, that should be good enough to keep your feet dry while walking in the rain.

This also allows the outer fabric to remain breathable. That makes this show versatile enough for walks or as casual wear in hot conditions. However, the hard rubber sole may squeak on wooden surfaces.

If you want a trekking shoe for light treks that need 1-2 days, the Max Protect is a good option. Even if you use it for longer treks, the feel of the Goodyear tires at the bottom of your feet feels solidly reassuring.

Sketchers Glide-Step Trail

trekking boots for men in India

Pros

  • A robust trekking shoe
  • Rugged and sticky outsole
  • A comfortable footbed

Cons

  • Requires a break-in period
  • It is expensive

This is the Trail version of the Glide Step shoe from Sketchers that comes with a mid-ankle design. A first look will tell you that this is a well-built trekking shoe with a leather upper and the beefy Goodyear rubber sole.

As expected, the Goodyear sole provides great grip and the geometric-shaped midsole adds to the overall stability. That said, I would have liked a bit more protection at the front end. Considering the premium build quality, there should not be any issues with long-term durability.

The leather upper makes the shoe fully waterproof. However, that makes the shoe a bit heavy. You will need a few days to break in this product. But thanks to the Memory Foam cushioning, the footbed offers a soft feel and ensures comfort throughout a long day of trekking.

Overall, the Glide-Step Trail is designed to handle rough terrain. Besides, it is versatile enough for casual use, unless you don’t mind the low-profile design.

Best Budget Trekking Shoes For Men in India

Quechua NH150 Hiking Boots

Quechua waterproof shoes for trekking

If you are seeking a waterproof men’s trekking shoe with an affordable price tag, the NH150 from Quechua is a good option. Moreover, you can get it at a good discount during the off-season sales.

But, the waterproofing is limited to 2 hours of walking in the rain. Still, I like the fact that Quechua is transparent about the specs,

The new version of these shoes is lighter in weight. The EVA foam midsole offers a good amount of cushioning. The important point is, the shoe is designed for off-road trails and not for mountain trekking. So, it’s best used in forests or over cemented trails. The 4mm spikes offer decent traction over muddy trails.

I wouldn’t rate the NH150 boot high in terms of durability. However, if you use them within their limitations, they will serve you well. For any beginner trekker looking for budget hiking shoes in India, they are one of the best options. If you want the best trekking boots for trails like the Everest base camp, look elsewhere.

Woodland Dnavy M27 Boots

There was a time when Woodland trekking boots were the only heavy-duty option available in India. Not anymore.

This trekking boot from Woodlands comes with a traditional design and a nubuck leather upper. While they are not the most comfortable options that you will find, these are durable shoes that work well for covering rough terrain. Also, the leather outer keeps the foot protected from all sides.

The rubber outsoles from Woodlands offer enough grip over rocks and mud. However, they don’t perform well over wet moss and snow. The rubber lugs are hard-wearing and don’t change shape easily. The leather outer provides decent water resistance and is breathable. But keep in mind that these are heavy boots. So don’t get them fully wet by immersing them in water.

One thing is, these boots tend to last even if you use them roughly. So you can depend on it while trekking through high altitudes. On the downside, the cushioning of the midsole is medium. Combined with the higher weight, your feet can get tired after a long day of walking.

Wildcraft Magellan

Affordable shoes for trekking in India

The Wildcraft Magellan is a good option for those on a budget, but don’t expect premium cushioning and comfort. The synthetic top material is not waterproof so don’t think of crossing streams with the shoe on. Also, it is not meant for walking on snow.

The Magellan is one of the trekking shoes from Wildcraft that comes with Hypagrip technology. The traction you get from the soles is decent but not exceptional. Also, the sole tends to wear out quickly.

Overall durability is good enough to last around 100 kilometers. But you can’t depend on the Magellan beyond that range. While it can be a good option for day hikes, I would not pick it for multi-day treks.

Weinbrenner Brown Boots

Weinbrenner has been manufacturing outdoor-inspired footwear for a long time and their shoes are available vis Bata. While these are affordably priced, you get a good level of comfort and quality. The build quality is good too and the boots can handle rough terrain.

The top material is a combination of mesh and artificial leather. While it is breathable, there is no mention of waterproofing. The foot chamber is well padded and the midsole can absorb impacts. However, the insole is on the thinner side with limited cushioning.

The sole is sturdy and the multidirectional lugs offer a decent grip on muddy and slippery terrain. However, durability is one aspect where the shoe could have performed better. Many users have reported Weinbreinner shoes falling apart after a few months of use over mountain trails.

While these boots are a good choice for budget buyers, don’t expect them to be long-lasting.

Final Thoughts

These are 14 options for picking the best trekking shoes in India. Obviously, the quality will depend on the price you pay. So, make your choice by balancing your needs with the budget.

Obviously, the range of choice of trekking boots for women will be different. Female trekkers can check out our list of the best women’s trekking boots in India.

If you frequently trek through high-altitude terrain, then it’s best to invest in a top-grade shoe. For occasional trekkers, the mid-range options will be good enough. Then again, if you are prone to ankle twists or rolls, you might pick a boot that offers extra support.

And no matter the trekking boots you buy, make sure to maintain them and clean them after every use.

Now, it’s time for you to make the right choice.
